Sustainability

Macerich®, one of the nation’s leading shopping center owners, developers and operators, is sharply focused on sustainability as a long-term, fully integrated business approach. Throughout its operations, the company is actively integrating sustainable practices designed to ensure a healthy environment for employees, retailers, shoppers and communities. These efforts are designed to help conserve resources while simultaneously supporting the company’s business goals.

For Macerich, the positive economic returns stemming from sustainable practices are equally as important as the social, cultural and environmental benefits. These endeavors complement the company’s longstanding philosophy of engaging and giving back to its local communities.

The company initially implemented a strategic energy plan, which focuses less on certifications and more on making changes across the board to help save energy and the environment, while delivering lower costs. Since then, a comprehensive, five-year sustainability plan was launched. Sustainability is integrated across the portfolio and tailored to each property. Elevating sustainability within the company’s corporate culture is a cornerstone of Macerich’s commitment.

What We’re Doing at Scottsdale Fashion Square
  • Our Security Staff uses Global Electric Motorcars (GEM Carts) and Segways instead of vehicles powered by gas.
  •  Many of our retailers now offer shoppers the option of reusable bags.
  • We exclusively use green cleaning products at our center.
  • The center has implemented new lighting protocols that allow us to minimize our energy use and lower our carbon footprint without any impact on the shopping experience.
  • Our center has a recently upgraded HVAC system that minimizes our energy usage and lowers our carbon footprint.
  • The center added a Smart Irrigation System
  •  In 2008, the center recycled 530 tons of cardboard – that accounts for about 20 percent of all our waste.
  •  We’re implementing a Total Recycling Program where all of the trash in the mall will be taken to a sorting facility, sorted, recycled and only the “true waste” will be discarded.
  • With the Barneys New York addition to the mall, we recycled the following:
    • 30,000 tons of concrete/asphalt
    • 6,000 tons of steel
    • 300,000 cubic yards of soil given to the city that was used for freeway upgrades
    • 65 percent of construction waste has been recycled
    • Using scrap materials for artists to create a rendering that will be displayed on property
  • Nordstrom is recycling restaurant waste for compost
  • We’ve added reduced flow toilets and automatic faucets in public restrooms.
  • The center has added light motion sensors in Management Office and staff restrooms to help conserve energy.
  • The Management Office now uses reverse osmosis water instead of bottled water and no longer uses paper plates and cups in favor of reusable items.
